Lock 27 brewing was named to honor the impact the Miami & Erie canal had on transportation and commerce in Dayton.
- Our Story
The History of Lock 27
In the early 1800s, the canal provided the quickest access to the Ohio river and lake Erie, allowing ohioan farmers, business owners, and residents easy options to cheaply transport products and travel across the state. This helped Dayton to grow into new, bourgeoning markets, learn different things from others across the state, and bring back unique and exotic goods to utilize within their own community.
An important lock along the canal was lock 27, located in Miamisburg, Ohio. The lock raised and lowered watercrafts so they could continue their journey on the canal with no trouble. Though the prominence of the miami and erie canal faded as other means of travel grew and lock 27 was eventually put out of commission, the effect the canal had on Dayton and the state is undeniable and fueled a desire to travel further and faster.
